Truly Pinoy: Carinderia ni Tandang Sora in Dubai

Life of an Overseas Filipino Worker is never easy. We work very hard to earn money for our families and endure the pain of being away for several months, sometimes even years. Para hindi masyadong mahome-sick, we satisfy ourselves with Facebook feeds from home, Skype conversations during day offs, Pinoy home-cooked meals and anything else that could remind us of life back in the Philippines.

Kaya naman sobrang grateful ako for the growing number of Filipino restaurants here in the UAE. Kahit papano, they make us feel closer to home 🙂

like this one!

We discovered Carinderia ni Tandang Sora in Deira Dubai back in April and we immediately became fans.

Apart from its menu, what really makes Carinderia ni Tandang Sora stand out is its ‘ala -museum’ interiors which remind me of my Philippine History & Noli Me Tangere  lessons in high school. Actually, pati nga staff nila naka katipunero outfits eh! So cool!

Para maka-relate kayo, here are some photos we took during our visits…

Their servers wear katipunero outfits!

Can you spot Jose Rizal? Apolinario Mabini? Emilio Aguinaldo? Eh si Tandang Sora?

More bayani portraits

I love that they maintained the concept all throughout the restaurant

“Kainan ng mga Bagong Bayani”

O diba? What else could be more Pinoy than that?!

Nakakatuwa na they really made an effort to create an atmosphere that will surely evoke that makabayan feeling na minsan nakakaligtaan na natin.

The Philippine flag is also proudly hanging on one of their walls

1st Visit – Getting Acquainted with Tandang Sora

Dahil super gutom kami that time, my husband and I ordered a pot of Bulalo and Beef Salpicao. Prior to our visit, we didn’t really know much about Tandang Sora kaya we just ordered the first items we saw on the menu. I think we got lucky kasi it turned out na bulalo pala is one of their best sellers. Masarap and generous yung servings nila. The beef salpicao was also a winner 🙂

Beef Bulalo (w/ unlimited rice), AED55

Beef Salpicao (w/ unlimited rice), AED35

We ended up taking home half of our order kasi andami ng servings nila!

2nd Visit – Fridate with my Sister

Twice a month lang ang day-off ng sister ko so we try our best to take her out once in a while. Since she was craving for Pinoy food, our destination was Tandang Sora of course 🙂

The restaurant was running full so we had no choice but sit outside. The heat was still tolerable naman so ok lang.

Must try! Beef Sisig (w/ unlimited rice), AED40

Another round of Beef Bulalo, AED55

bottomless iced team (AED10) and sago’t gulaman (AED8)

Sulit ang off =)

My only complaint was medyo mabagal ang service nila that Friday kasi kulang sila sa staff. Parang hindi nila naanticipate yung dami ng customers. Yun lang. Overall, nag-enjoy naman kami 🙂

3rd Visit – Sizzling Fiesta and Boodle Fight Galore

Few Fridays ago, it was our friends turn to try Tandang Sora. I won’t bore you with details anymore. Just watch our video below…

By the way, we ordered their Tropang Mindanao boodle fight (AED200) and Sizzling Fiesta (AED250).
