Love that is… (A Desperate Housewives Review)

I was watching desperate housewives last night. There was a scene which moved me and at the same time broke my heart. All I could say was “aaaaaawwww =(”

You see, Carlos (Gabriel’s estranged husband) lost his sight from a tornado accident 5 years ago. Unfortunately, that was the same time they realized they still love each other and decided to get married again. Of course, losing his sight permanently will mean he won’t be able to get his job back. He will be penniless and worse, a burden due to his disability. Knowing Gabriel who will not choose to stay with a poor and blind man who cannot provide her luxuries, Carlos was hesitant to let Gabriel know about his condition. He tricked Gabriel and told her that his condition was just temporary and he will gain his sight beck in a few months. Eventually, Gabriel found out he was lying. It finally made sense to her that Carlos will be blind for the rest of his life and she will be the one in charge to find ways for them to survive. Still confused and frustrated with how all their plans failed, she opted to stay with him because she loved him. As expected, it was difficult for her since she was used to a lavish lifestyle. What made it worse was she had to attend to her husband’s needs all the time. Being blind, Carlos will have to depend on her to complete even the simplest tasks. Also, it was like being hit by karma since her life before the accident was all about shopping, making sure she looked great, had the nicest clothes and expensive jewelries, and money – lots and lots of money. And with a flick of a finger, she was left with nothing but a blind husband who can’t even see how beautiful she was.

On the brighter side, the hardships changed them for the better. Carlos who, before the accident was arrogant, ambitious, and just treated Gabriel as a possession became humble and compassionate. He realized how he wasted his life gaining money and took everything else for granted. Gabriel, on the other hand was materialistic and self-centered. All she cared for was her looks and luxuries. Five years later, old selfish Gabriel was gone. She is now a poor, tired and fat mother who is willing to set aside all her needs for her family. Well, she finally accepted her fate. She doesn’t have to look good since her husband won’t see her anyway. Both Carlos and Gabriel were contented with their lives (of course Gabriel can’t help to think of the past sometimes). I even remember Carlos say one time that he’s much happier now because he may not be rich but he has two beautiful children and a loving wife who gives him the happiness no amount of money can provide.

Now, after 5 years of being blind, Carlos encountered another accident which opened the possibility of being able to see again. He underwent a successful surgery. He was in tears to see his daughters for the first time. Of course, he was as happy to see a not-so-fabulous Gabriel. When he scanned the house, he realized most of their expensive paintings, furniture, etc. were missing. Gabriel confessed she had to sell them to pay their mortgage and all other expenses which he understood. But one thing made him angry; Gabriel also sold his precious baseball which he inherited from his grandfather! He demanded Gabriel take it back because it’s valuable to him. But how ashamed and disheartened he was when he passed by Gabriel’s closet and found out it was empty because she also sold most of her clothes and shoes. Gabriel, who used to love her wardrobe more than him gave up everything to keep both ends together for the family. Gabriel did take the ball back to him. What’s surprising was what Carlos did after. He sold his precious ball to buy Gabriel a nice dress.  At that time they realized nothing is more important to them than (their love for) each other.

—————————End of my lousy story telling————————–

That scene reminded me of this story:

Excerpts from “The Gift of the Magi”

There was a poor old couple,
their love was intense and youthful.
The lady had lovely long hairs,
the husband loved them more than her ornamental wears.
The husband had a watch with broken and torn band,
It was advertising his poverty because of no watch on his hand.
The lady needed a comb and drier to keep her hair dressed,
The husband required a wrist band for his watch but kept it unexpressed.
On the day of their marriage anniversary, for the celebration,
they went separately to the market with their individual mission.
In the evening they came back to celebrate the function,
with mementos in their hands and with tears of jubilation.
but the husband saw his wife with missing hairs and carrying a lovely wristband,
the wife found her husband had no watch but carrying a drier and comb in his hand.
The husband had purchased the drier and comb by selling the watch,
The wife has sold the hair to get the band for her husband’s watch to match..

And this song:

When you love someone by Bryan Adams

 When you love someone
You’ll do anything
You’ll do all the crazy things that you can’t explain

You’ll shoot the moon
Put out the sun
When you love someone
You’ll deny the truth
Believe a lie
There’ll be times that you’ll believe you can really fly
But your lonely nights have just begun
When you love someone
[ Lyrics from: ]
When you love someone
You feel it deep inside
And nothin’ else could ever change your mind

When you want someone
When you need someone
When you love someone

When you love someone
You’ll sacrifice
You’d give it everything you got
And you won’t think twice
You’d risk it all
No matter what may come
When you love someone
You’ll shoot the moon
Put out the sun
When you love someone

Well, I’m just amazed on how much unconditional love can do. Yes, I had to highlight unconditional because selfish love is never beneficial to any kind of relationship. We can feel unconditional love from our parents, siblings, spouses, children, and even friends. This kind of love is powerful. It can change even the meanest person; it can help someone survive the most difficult times; it can make the loneliest person happy; and most importantly, it can make anyone believe that life is amazing.

Of course, we can’t argue the fact that no matter how much we love someone, he/she will still hurt us in ways we never expected. Well, that’s why it’s called unconditional. We give someone everything because we love them so much but at the same time we are risking to get hurt. After all, “they never said loving someone should be easy; it should be worth it.”

Personally, I find love amazing. It makes you unselfish. It gives you feeling of contentment. It makes you feel a rainbow of emotions. It makes everything around you beautiful. And it makes your life worth it.

As they say, the greatest feeling in the world is to love; and be loved.” I know all these, because my heart, right now, is full of love.
